Wildfire Control

During the months January to April, and sometimes up until July, Palau receives limited rainfall. This dry season puts Palau at risk to unplanned or accidental wildfires. Palau’s thin layer of topsoil is in every way prone to erosion and burning, and some species of trees can easily combust, so therefore, the objective of this program is to coordinate with Babeldaob communities to reduce wildfire incidence in order to maintain forest and watershed health.  

In 2020, particularly in late March until early April, there were several fires and one large wildfire on Babeldaob Island. Here are several photos and videos of the community action taken during the wildfires:
