Education through Outdoor Classrooms

In March, Palau closed incoming flights and we were suddenly separate from the outside world. COVID-19 is still unknown to Palau yet we observe it through media and understand how so many countries stood still as the pandemic grew. With much time on our hands, it is a good opportunity to heal environmental damage and initiate education. These are some of the September highlights with education and results of our programs.

Outdoor Classrooms take students from their desks to experience the environment first-hand and learn by doing. Teachers usually are the ones who love these types of classrooms the most, and at times, Ebiil Society does hold field trips for just educators!

Koror Elementary School Students (KES) attended Outdoor Classrooms for Mangrove, Seagrass Ecology, Reforestation and more. Here are some of the adventures we had in September.

The KES 5th Graders discovered Forest / Watershed Ecology.

They visited Otulaibars and them presented their findings back at the Ebiil Research Center.

Ebiil Society traveled to Koror for the KES 5th graders’ classroom instruction on Forests and Ngarkeklau Archaeology for their field studies.

This is following a Mangrove Ecology Outdoor Class with KES 4th graders earlier in September, to explore Ngerkeklau mangroves.

These mangroves are SOOO AWESOME that the students had a great deal to speak out during their presentations.

On September 8th, KES 4th grade students joined Ebiil Society for a Seagrass Ecology Outdoor class. Please see photos below.
