Canoe Carving

Traditional Navigation Much a Part of Ebiil Society

2019 furthered the education about traditional
navigation as in January 2019, Grand Master
Navigator Sesario Sewralur began a canoe carving
study at Ebiil Society.

The kaeb is a traditional racing canoe built from
the trunk of local breadfruit and remains as a
training canoe for traditional navigation.
Education conducted includes sailing classes and
summer camp trips to Ngerkeklau Island.

Upon completion of the canoe in early June, Ebiil
Society staff and volunteers joined Sewralur
on an oceanic voyage to Ngulu Island of Yap on the
Alingano Maisu.

Outrigger Canoe Carving Study Begins

January 3, 2019 marked the launch of the Ebiil Outrigger Canoe Carving Study, beginning with the delivery of a large breadfruit trunk on December 2, 2018.

The Canoe (Kaeb) Carving with Master Navigator Sesario Sewralur is a project to rebuild the knowledge of traditional outrigger canoe carving.

The canoe will be built from local breadfruit and is expected to be completed by March 2019. Photos above show a basket of fish and taro, which was placed on the trunk of the tree for the spirit of navigation.

The carving is taking place at the Ebiil Natural Science Training Center at Ollei, Ngarchelong and is open to the public. If you are interested in participating / observing the process, please call us @855-2676 for dates and times.

The progress of the project will be documented on the Ebiil Society Facebook page and ebiilsociety.org web site. For more information, please contact ngerkeklau@gmail.com.

Following the completion of the carving project by March 2019,  Traditional Navigation will be implemented into the Outdoor Classroom Training and Ebiil Summer Camps. In addition, a film will be produced to document the carving, launch and sailing of the canoe.

Palauan canoes in past ages included the Kaeb (sailing/racing) and Kabekel (war canoe) and were built from the local hardwoods. Information about  canoes and other Palauan culture and history can be found in the KRAMER anthropology reference books, which can be downloaded from www.belaunationalmuseum.net.
